Revoke All Measures Against Jafar Panahi!
The ICFR condemns the new prison sentence against Jafar Panahi
The ICFR condemns the new sentence against filmmaker and ICFR Ambassador Jafar Panahi, and calls on the Iranian authorities to revoke it, along with every other measure taken against him.
On 27 October, Panahi's lawyer disclosed that Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court had sentenced him in absentia to five years and one month in prison, ordered the confiscation of all his property, and banned him from travel and social media for two years. The sentence adds to a one-year prison term for "propaganda against the system," upheld in June.
Similar cases have been brought in absentia against other filmmakers, among them Farzad Khoshdast and Reza Dormishian.
We stand with our colleagues and demand that all sentences and charges against them be dropped, and that all pressure, harassment and intimidation stop. The ICFR is following these cases closely and will report regularly to the international community on their progress, and on any further cases we fear may follow.
