Solidarity with FreedomFilmFest

Global film community urges Malaysian authorities to drop all investigations and acts of intimidation on FreedomFilmFest

On 2nd June, Anna Har the festival director of the FREEDOMFILMFEST, and cartoonist Amin Landak, were called in for questioning by the Indonesian police over the production and online screening of a short animated film on police torture entitled, “Chili Powder and Thinner”. On the same day, the police raided the office of FreedomFilmFest and Amin’s home, and confiscated computers, modems and other related equipment. Subsequently, on 6 July, four more activists were called in for questioning. Three of them are members of SUARAM, a human rights organisation that co-produced the film, and the other was a guest speaker at the screening event.

Release Tatsiana Hatsura-Yavorska!

In an open letter, the global film community expresses concern over Hatsura-Yavorska's arrest, along with that of other Belarusian human rights defenders.

The Human Rights Film Network, other film festivals from around the world and the International Coalition for Filmmakers at Risk joined a global call for the release of Belarusian cultural activist and human rights defender Tatsiana Hatsura-Yavorska, Director of the International Film Festival WATCH DOCS Belarus, who was arrested in Minsk on the 5th of April, along with several other human rights defenders.

ARC Presents Safety Guide for Artists

Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) at PEN America released its first-ever Safety Guide for Artists. While comparable tools exist for practitioners like journalists, human rights defenders, and cartoonists, no such guide currently exists for artists at large, and we hope it will fill a crucial gap in resources available for artists to learn about and better respond to risks related to their work.

Urgent Call for the Release of Hajooj Kuka

The International Coalition for Filmmakers at Risk (ICFR) and its founding institutions, the European Film Academy, International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and International Film Festival Rotterdam, together with the undersigning, call for the Sudanese authorities to immediately and unconditionally release filmmaker Hajooj Kuka and the four artists imprisoned with him.

Moataz Abdelwahab disappeared on 5 May from his office in Cairo, only to re-appear on 11 May for a hearing at the Supreme Court for State Security, where he was accused of “partnering with a terrorist organisation” and “spreading false news” (case 586).

Urgent Call for the Freedom of Filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof facing Incerceration in Iran

We strongly protest against the summons of Mohammad Rasoulof and urgently call on the Iranian authorities to ensure his safety and health. We also ask for the charges against Mohammad Rasoulof to be retracted and the travel ban against him to be lifted immediately and unconditionally and call on festivals around the world, cinemas and all artists to do the same.
